Bring your brain. Bring your opinions. Let’s nerd out together.
We invite you to join the Learn, Connect, Innovate workshops series to help shape the future of LUMEN—a new open-science discovery platform built on trust, usability, and collaboration. These workshops are designed to capture your perspectives and preferences for how LUMEN should support research across four core domains: Mathematics, Molecular Dynamics, Earth Systems, and Social Sciences & Humanities. Whether you’re a PhD student or a Professor, your voice matters in defining a system that reflects the real needs of its users. By joining, you’ll connect with peers from across Europe and beyond, explore innovative ideas, and help drive discovery and impact in your community. It’s a friendly space to share your expertise, test new ideas, and shape a system that supports the way you work!
Drawing on insights from earlier research and interviews, we’ll share examples of potential system functionalities and invite you to co-design ways they can best enhance your research experience. The workshops are intentionally interactive, inclusive, and inspiring—lasting no more than two hours (with breaks), and running from October to December 2025. Register here to express interest in shaping collaborative research discovery system.
Workshop Series
Visualisation & Data Representation Tools
This workshop is dedicated to exploring with users their preferences for interactive visualisation features that could support data exploration, interpretation, and communication. This may involve discussing customizable templates, and creating dynamic visual representations of their findings and data.
Recommendation & Personalization
This workshop focuses on understanding users’ views and expectations for designing a sophisticated recommendation engine that learns from user interactions and preferences. By incorporating machine learning algorithms, the LUMEN ecosystem could suggest relevant literature, datasets, and research software based on users’ past behavior and selected keywords. Features such as user feedback loops, personalized recommendations, and contextual explanations of suggestions, which foster trust and engagement, could be discussed.
Interdisciplinary Resource Discovery – data mesh
This workshop focuses on enhancing the discovery of interdisciplinary resources that bridge multiple scientific domains. This workshop is essential for researchers seeking to broaden their understanding and collaboration opportunities across disciplines, ultimately promoting innovative research practices.
Data Integration & Interoperability
This workshop will consider ways to design for seamless integration and interoperability of datasets across various platforms and domains. By discussing features such as a unified interface providing access to connected repositories, users can access a comprehensive view of available resources. This workshop is crucial for researchers who need to work with diverse datasets and ensure compatibility with existing research frameworks, ultimately promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and data sharing.
Advanced Search & Filtering Capabilities
This workshop focuses on enhancing the search experience through advanced filtering and sorting options. By implementing features such as Boolean operators, dynamic filtering systems, and interactive visual representations of search results to support rapid comparison and exploration, users can refine their queries to find the most relevant resources. Discussing the inclusion of a search history feature and contextual help for effective search strategies further supports users in navigating the LUMEN ecosystem.
LUMEN chatbot
This workshop centers around understanding the design of an AI-powered chatbot that will provide real-time assistance to users. Features such as chatbot personality, tone and rating responses, can be approached. This workshop is crucial for users seeking to voice their preferences for use of AI in LUMEN.
Meta-search & discovery tools
This workshop encompasses understanding users’ preferences for advanced meta-search capabilities that enable users to discover literature, datasets, and other scientific resources across domains. This workshop is essential for researchers who need to navigate vast amounts of information efficiently and effectively, ensuring they can access the most pertinent resources for their work.
Updating the User Profile
This workshop will discuss the various ways in which the GoTriple interface and user profile requires updating. Common User Profile functions will be discussed. This workshop is essential for all four domain groups.
Software Tools Catalogue
This workshop will discuss the ways in which users will interact with an automated software catalogue that integrates software tools and related resources accessible through the LUMEN ecosystem. By linking publications, datasets, source code, and software, users can discover and access relevant research software and associated resources tailored to their domain-specific needs. Features such as a user-friendly interface for browsing and searching the catalogue, along with detailed descriptions and usage examples, which enhance discoverability can be discussed.
Educational Resources & Training Modules
