LUMEN Project Launched in January 2025
The LUMEN (Linked User-driven Multidisciplinary Exploration Network) project was kicked off in Brussels on January 20 and 21, 2025, providing a first glimpse into the European Commission-funded project’s ambitious vision to revolutionise cross-disciplinary collaboration among four scientific domains.
On January 20 and 21, 2025, representatives from 20 partner organisations from 10 countries gathered in Brussels to launch the LUMEN project. Funded by the European Commission with approximately 7 million Euro, the project is an initiative to advance cross-domain collaboration and discovery processes in four academic fields: Mathematics (Maths), Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), Earth Systems (ES) and Molecular Dynamics (MD). The project will run from January 2025 to December 2027.
Coordinated by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), LUMEN is dedicated to expanding existing discovery platforms in the SSH (GoTriple) and Maths (Centre Mersenne) domains. The project will build new platforms for other domains using a white-label version of the GoTriple platform, and, in turn, deploy a set of interoperable platforms. These will include cross-platform features as well as domain-specific tools tailored to the needs of researchers. Eventually, this set of interconnected and interoperable platforms will work as a fully operational multidisciplinary ecosystem of discovery platforms, enabling seamless cross-disciplinary knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Bringing about a vast advance in innovative and customisable solutions for data discovery and interdisciplinary collaboration, LUMEN seeks to strengthen the ecosystem of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by enriching and improving the EOSC’s service portfolio.
Suzanne Dumouchel, the scientific coordinator of LUMEN, coins the core impacts of the project as follows:
“At its heart, LUMEN is a truly interdisciplinary vision of cross-domain collaboration throughout the entire research cycle. But more than that, LUMEN outcomes will increase the impact of research and improve collaboration among different scientific domains and, more importantly, it will enhance discovery experiences and deep explorations of data thanks to different innovative features tailored to communities’ needs. Fostering the principles of Open Science, LUMEN will help build trust in European scientific communities while strengthening the EOSC federation.”
